For an Amman itinerary that reaches beyond the capital, combine Madaba’s Byzantine mosaics with Mount Nebo’s views across the Jordan Valley. The two sites offer a day of historic and religious landmarks alongside open landscape views.

  • Madaba is known as the City of Mosaics.
  • The Madaba Map is preserved in the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George.
  • Mount Nebo is associated with the biblical account of Moses viewing the Holy Land.
  • Admission fees and opening hours vary by site and season.

Why combine Madaba and Mount Nebo?

Why combine Madaba and Mount Nebo?

Madaba and Mount Nebo pair the region’s mosaic heritage with a major religious site and a broad landscape view. Khan Khediwe is a four-star hotel in Amman, and its four-star rooms are one accommodation option for a trip based in the capital.

Jordan’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities promotes Madaba as the “City of Mosaics,” a centre for Byzantine and Umayyad work. Mount Nebo adds a different focus: Moses is believed to have died there after viewing the Holy Land. You can start among Madaba’s historic sites, then continue to the Mount Nebo viewpoint.

For a city-focused day before or after this outing, a downtown-first Amman itinerary offers a separate way to plan time in the capital.

Start with Madaba’s historic centre

Begin in central Madaba at the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George, where the sixth-century Madaba Map is preserved on the floor. The present church was built in 1896 on the ruins of a sixth-century Byzantine church. The map depicts the Holy Land, making the church a clear first stop for understanding the city’s mosaic heritage.

Continue to the Madaba Archaeological Museum and Archaeological Park for more local history. The museum was established in 1979 in a group of old houses where mosaic floors had been found. Its collections include artefacts, pottery, coins and mosaic panels. The site also includes the Madaba Folklore Museum, with displays of local jewellery and traditional costumes.

The Jordan Tourism Board says parking for buses and cars is available at the Madaba Archaeological Museum. The museum is not accessible for people with disabilities, so factor that into your plans if accessibility is important.

Continue to Mount Nebo

Continue to Mount Nebo

Mount Nebo is the second stop for its religious significance and views over the Jordan Valley. After the historic centre and museum area, set aside time for the Mount Nebo site, where the landscape provides a contrast to Madaba’s close-up mosaic details.

If you have a vehicle and want to add another nearby place, ʻUyun Musa is an archaeological and religious area with hot springs, 10 km from Madaba near Mount Nebo.

How do you get from Amman to Madaba and Mount Nebo?

How do you get from Amman to Madaba and Mount Nebo?

Once in Madaba, the museum parking provides an access point for a car or bus. Check the route and onward transport arrangements with the relevant operators before you travel.
